The Canine Unit has been operating as a part of the Patrol Division
since June of 2002. It was designed to give the Sheriff’s Office another
tool to locate illegal drugs, find lost persons, pursue suspects on
foot, uncover evidence, search buildings and most importantly, provide
additional officer safety. This is a tool that the Sheriff’s Office has
not possessed since 1971. The two-four legged deputies along with their
partners have assisted over twenty-five other local, state and federal
agencies in this region. Their extensive and ongoing training along with
being utilized over 670 times in this short time frame, has produced
many success stories. Deputy Rommell, a German Shepherd, handled by
Deputy Hank Cocking along with Deputy Neo, also a German Shepherd whose
handler is Deputy Keith Allen, staffs the Unit.
