| Major-General John Sedgwick was a war hero who
died at the battle of Spottsylvania, VA on May 9, 1864 during the Civil War. Born in
1813, he graduated from West Point in 1837 and went on to a distinguished pre-war career
in the Army. He served in several battles, such as "Bleeding Kansas," the
Seminole War, and the Mexican War. Despite several injuries, he always returned to
his post, and was twice promoted to replace Robert E. Lee. His last position was as
Corps commander of the Army of the Potomac. Sedgwick
County was established on February 26, 1867, with the city of Wichita as its county seat. The
first child born in the newly-formed Sedgwick County was Sedgwick Hoover, born on December
23, 1869.
