About Sedgwick County

Major-General John Sedgwick was a war hero who died at the battle of Spottsylvania, VA on May 9, 1864 during the Civil War.  Born in 1813, he graduated from West Point in 1837 and went on to a distinguished pre-war career in the Army.  He served in several battles, such as "Bleeding Kansas," the Seminole War, and the Mexican War.  Despite several injuries, he always returned to his post, and was twice promoted to replace Robert E. Lee.  His last position was as Corps commander of the Army of the Potomac.

Sedgwick County was established on February 26, 1867, with the city of Wichita as its county seat.  The first child born in the newly-formed Sedgwick County was Sedgwick Hoover, born on December 23, 1869.

For more information about Major-General Sedgwick, read William G. Cutler's History of the State of Kansas and Winslow Richard Elliott's General John Sedgwick: The Story of a Union Corps Commander
