Physical Disabilities Services

The Physical and Developmental Disabilities Advisory Board meets quarterly to evaluate plans and programs in this service system. The recommendations of the advisory board are utilized by the Board of County Commissioners to oversee services for persons with disabilities in Sedgwick County.

2010 Full Board Meetings are from noon to 1:30 p.m. on the following dates:

  • Tuesday, February 9 - Starkey
  • Tuesday, May 11 - ResCare
  • Tuesday, August 10 - The Arc
  • Tuesday, November 9 - KETCH

Full Board meetings will be hosted by volunteering agencies, notification will be sent prior to each meeting.

2010 Executive Committee Meetings are from 8 to 10 a.m. on the following dates at 615 N. Main, Wichita:

  • Wednesday, January 13
  • Wednesday, March 10
  • Wednesday, April 14
  • Wednesday, June 9
  • Wednesday, July 14
  • Wednesday, September 8
  • Wednesday, October 13
  • Wednesday, December 8

Call 660-5158 or 660-5221with any questions regarding the Physical Disabilities program.  Call 660-7630 regarding SCDDO services for persons with developmental disabilities. 

The following services are available in 2010 to persons with physical disabilities who are residents of Sedgwick County.

INFORMATION & ASSISTANCE

Information & Assistance provides the public one number to call for information on disability services in the community. This program regularly collects and maintains current information on these services, and identifies unmet needs.

THERAPY

Physical and occupational therapy are provided to persons with disabilities under the Therapy program.  Eligible participants have a traumatic brain injury, and their physician has prescribed physical or occupational therapy that is not covered by Medicare or Medicaid.  Therapy improves range of motion and strength, and can reduce or eliminate contractures. 

NUTRITION

Hot, nutritional meals are delivered by volunteers to persons with disabilities who are homebound.  Two-day emergency rations are provided to all program participants for instances when a daily delivery cannot be made. 

PERSONAL EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT

Wheelchair modifications for persons with severe physical disabilities are designed and fabricated to enhance posture control and eliminate decubitis ulcers.  Work site and home modifications are also provided to accommodate modified wheelchairs. 

EMPLOYMENT

The Employment program promotes self-sufficiency among persons with disabilities by assisting them in obtaining and maintaining gainful employment.  Those who secure employment are tracked long-term and are provided guidance. 

ADULT DAY CARE

Adult day care services help the ability of persons with disabilities to function in the community and remain independent. Health services, educational classes, socialization opportunities and transportation to community activities are provided at an adult day care center in the community.  

VISION

The Vision program is an early intervention program for children with visual impairment.  This program enhances development and level of independence of these children through individualized services designed to meet their varied needs and abilities.  Adapted toys, equipment and learning materials are utilized in the educational process. 

FLEX & HOME MODIFICATIONS

Persons with disabilities are provided assistance with purchasing services and/or home modifications to enhance the safety or accessibility of their home environment and the ability to live independently.  Examples of such services or modifications include dental work, wheelchair ramps, shower benches and lift chairs.
