The following services are available to persons with physical disabilities who are residents of Sedgwick
County. Contact the Department on Aging's Office on Physical Disabilities at 660-5158 for more information about these services.
DISABILITY INFORMATION & REFERRAL SERVICE (DIRS)
DIRS provides the public one number to
call for information on disability services in the community. DIRS regularly
collects and maintains current information on these services. This program
also identifies unmet needs.
THERAPY
Physical and occupational therapy are
provided to persons with disabilities under the Therapy program. Eligible
participants have a traumatic brain injury, and their physician has prescribed
physical or occupational therapy that is not covered by Medicare or Medicaid.
Therapy improves range of motion and strength, and can reduce or eliminate
contractures.
NUTRITION
Hot, nutritional meals are delivered by
volunteers to persons with disabilities who are homebound. Two-day emergency
rations are provided to all program participants for instances when a daily
delivery cannot be made.
PERSONAL EMERGENCY
EQUIPMENT
Wheelchair modifications for persons with
severe physical disabilities are designed and fabricated to enhance posture
control and eliminate decubitis ulcers. Work site and home modifications are
also provided to accommodate modified wheelchairs.
EMPLOYMENT
The Employment program promotes
self-sufficiency among persons with disabilities by assisting them in
obtaining and maintaining gainful employment. Those who secure employment are
tracked long-term and are provided guidance.
ADULT DAY CARE
Adult day care services help the ability
of persons with disabilities to function in the community and remain
independent. Health services, educational classes, socialization opportunities
and transportation to community activities are provided at an adult day care
center in the community.
VISION
The Vision program is an early
intervention program for children with visual impairment. This program
enhances development and level of independence of these children through
individualized services designed to meet their varied needs and abilities.
Adapted toys, equipment and learning materials are utilized in the educational
process.
FLEX & HOME MODIFICATIONS
Persons with disabilities are provided
assistance with purchasing services and/or home modifications to enhance the
safety or accessibility of their home environment and the ability to live
independently. Examples of such services or modifications include dental
work, wheelchair ramps, shower benches and lift chairs.
FOSTER GRANDPARENT
Children with physical disabilities are
tutored one-on-one in the classroom by a Foster Grandparent. Children learn
the importance of education by meeting educational objectives, and are more
likely to remain in school for the entire year and advance to the next grade
level.
EPILEPSY EDUCATION
This program provides education on
epilepsy to persons with epilepsy, the general public, and disability service
providers. For persons with epilepsy, the goals are to increase coping skills
and decrease occurrence of seizures. For the general public and service
providers, the goals are to educate them on types of seizures and the
appropriate interventions for each type.
SPECIALIZED TRANSPORTATION
Specialized transportation for persons
with physical disabilities is provided throughout Sedgwick County. Eligible
participants call one number in order to schedule a ride and an appropriate
vendor is located according to individual needs. Rides are provided 24 hours
a day, 7 days per week.
RESPITE CARE / ENRICHMENT
Respite care strengthens family stability by providing
caregivers of persons with physical disabilities a reprieve from intense
care demands thereby reducing stress that can result in abuse, neglect,
divorce, and out-of-home placements. Enrichment activities such as
expressive therapy offered to persons with physical disabilities enhance
social interaction skills and independence.
