Lake Afton Watershed Sampling

Lake Afton Watershed Diagram

The Lake Afton Watershed was identified by KDHE as being eutrophic due to the excessive nutrient loading that could be attributed to land management in the upper reaches of the watershed. In 2001, a Friends of Lake Afton (FOLA) group was organized, the watershed was mapped, water and soil sampling was initiated, and funds were obtained for installation of soil and water conservation BMPs (best management practices). Landowners eagerly installed the conservation practices with the cost-share assistance and water quality in the Lake improved. The SCCD continues to collect water quality data each month on the Lake Afton Watershed.
