Nola Tedesco Foulston, District Attorney

Consumer Media Release

June 4, 2004

The Office of District Attorney Nola Tedesco Foulston is warning consumers of various possible scams arising as a result of the current gasoline prices. Consumers have recently reported complaints to her office as follows:

In each instance, consumers reported that a company called the consumer representing they had won coupons for several hundred dollars worth of free gas but requested personal information regarding the consumer’s bank account allegedly to withdraw a $3.95 charge for shipping the coupons.

Similar scams have operated in other states.

Nola Foulston advises consumers of the following in order to avoid scam artists who try to trick people into giving out personal financial information:

  1. Never give out bank account or credit card numbers over the phone if you didn’t initiate the call to a reputable, known business.

  2. Beware of so-call “free trial offers,” especially those that ask you for private information.

  3. Check your accounts each month for unauthorized charges including your bank accounts, credit card statements and even phone bill.
