District Attorney Nola Tedesco Foulston is warning consumers to be vigilant with the release of personal information. Retailers may ask for your phone number at the time of check out for marketing purposes. You are not required to provide any personal information without a legitimate stated purpose.
Identity theft has reached epidemic proportions in this country and can be perpetrated in many ways. To protect yourself, review your credit report annually; place passwords on your credit card, bank and phone accounts; secure personal information in your home; guard your mail and trash from theft; do not carry your Social Security card and give out your number only when absolutely necessary; and carefully review bills in a timely manner.For additional information on protecting yourself from these crimes, contact the Consumer Fraud and Economic Crimes Division of the District Attorney’s Office at 383-7281
