Criminal Division Media Releases

Upon conclusion of investigations of public interest, including those where deadly force has occurred, it is the policy of the District Attorney to notify the media and the public of the final legal decision.  The following information is presented with regard to recent decisions of this office.  The inclusion of specific incidents is updated on a regular basis.

2013

• The lawyers in the 18th Judicial District which covers Wichita and Sedgwick County Join with the National District Attorney's Association to extend condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of District Attorney Mike McLelland and his wife Cynthia McLelland of Kaufmann County, Texas.
• The investigation and review of the law enforcement use of deadly force resulting in the death of Karen L. Jackson occurring on July 10, 2012, at 708 N. Spruce in Wichita,  Sedgwick County, Kansas has been completed.

2012

• Review of the law enforcement use of deadly force resulting in the death of Marquez Smart occurring on March 10, 2012, at 215 N. Mosley in Wichita, Sedgwick County, Kansas.
• Review of the law enforcement use of deadly force resulting in the death of DeJuan Colbert occurring on October 30, 2011, at the Dollar General Store, 2427 West Pawnee, in Wichita, Sedgwick County Kansas.
• "Urban Skittles" game players will be prosecuted.  Originating in England, a dangerous game called urban Skittles has recently occurred in a local place of business in Wichita.
