Location
Sedgwick County is located in South Central Kansas along the Arkansas River. It encompasses an area of 1,008 square miles and is comprised of one major metropolis, Wichita, and 20 other smaller cities.
Population
There are approximately 471,000 residents in Sedgwick County.
Local Government
The Sedgwick County County Commission acts as the legislative body and appoints the county manager who serves as the chief administrator. The county commission is comprised of five commissioners who are elected in a staggered manner to serve four-year terms.
Public Safety
Sedgwick County public safety includes a full-time fire district, sheriff's office, emergency medical service, corrections and detention services, forensic science center, and emergency communication and management departments. Many of the municipalities within Sedgwick County have their own police and fire departments.
Health Care
Sedgwick County is the health care capitol of Kansas with more than 20 acute-care and specialty hospitals, many of which emphasize in cardiology, spinal research and practice, physical therapy, oncology, neonatal care and more. The area also has more than 50 nursing homes and assisted living facilities.
The Sedgwick County Health Department works to find and provide medical treatment to residents. The department focuses heavily on health access, tobacco issues, community wellness, healthy pregnancies and babies and overall community health protection.
Higher Education
Sedgwick County is home to many universities, colleges and technical schools, including Friends University, Newman University, Wichita State University, Heritage College, Vatterott College, Kansas Braille Transcript Institute, ITT Technical Institute, and Wichita Area Technical College.
Culture, Entertainment and Recreation
Home to the largest city in Kansas, Sedgwick County offers a wide range of culture, entertainment, and recreation options, including the Kansas Coliseum, Lake Afton Park, Sedgwick County Park, Sedgwick County Zoo, and the new INTRUST Bank Arena currently under construction in downtown Wichita.
Other attractions include museums, parks, trails, theaters, art centers, festivals, air shows, shopping, restaurants, hotels, convention centers, stadiums, and more!
