General Election - April 7, 2009

Cities and School Districts

Non-partisan elections are held in odd numbered years except for the cities of Colwich and Garden Plain, which have elections every year.

Qualifications: City offices:   Registered voter and resident of the city and the Ward/District
  School District offices: Registered voter and resident of the district and the Member District

Filing Deadline:         

12:00 Noon, January 27, 2009

  • City of Wichita - Wichita City Clerk’s Office

  • 2nd Class Cities - City Clerk’s Office

  • 3rd Class Cities - City Clerk’s Office or Election Office

  • School Districts - Election Office

Filing Fees and Signature Requirements

First Class Cities:     

Wichita                                                            

$10.00 + $35.00 report fee or

Mayor, 100 valid signatures (Charter Ordinance #114) + $35.00 report fee
Council Member, 50 valid signatures (Charter Ordinance #115) + $35.00 report fee Valid signatures are those of registered voters of the city and the district.

Second Class Cities: 

Bel Aire, Derby, Haysville, Mulvane, Park City, Valley Center

$10.00 or 50 valid signatures

In cities with a population between 5,000 and 100,000, the filing papers shall be accompanied with the above filing fee, or 50 valid signatures, or by signatures equal to 1% of the ballots cast at the last general city election, whichever is less.  Valid signatures are those of registered voters of the city and the ward. [K.S.A. 25-2110(c)]

Third Class Cities:    

Andale, Bentley, Cheney, Clearwater, Colwich, Eastborough, Garden Plain, Goddard, Kechi, Maize, Mount Hope, Viola

$5.00 or 25 valid signatures

In cities with a population of less than 5,000, filing papers shall be accompanied with the above filing fee, or 25 signatures, or by a number of signatures equal to 10% of the ballots cast at the last general city election, whichever is less.  Valid signatures are those of registered voters of the city.  [K.S.A. 25-2110(b)]

School District Office:   

$5.00  /  USD 259 Wichita: $5.00 + $35.00 report fee

Signature requirements:

At Large position, 50 valid signatures. Valid signatures are those of registered voters of the school district.  [K.S.A. 25-2020(2)]

Member District position, 50 valid signatures or 10% of registered voters, whichever is less. Valid signatures are those of registered voters of the school district and member district.  [K.S.A. 25-2020(1)]
