Severe Weather (Tornadoes, Winter Storms)
In the spring, storms and tornadoes can form rapidly. In the winter, snow and ice storms can intensify in a short period of
time. For all storms:
-
Be alert to changing weather conditions.
-
Outdoor warning sirens will be used to alert the public of approaching
tornadoes.
-
Tune in to local radio and television stations. Listen to weather reports often and know weather terms: "Watch" means conditions are favorable; "Warning" means a storm has been observed.
-
NOAA weather radios are especially helpful in
monitoring changes from "watches" to "warnings."
Flooding
Extended periods of rain can quickly cause flooding in low-lying areas, or cause streams and rivers to
overflow.
-
Tune in to local radio and television stations for more information on flooded areas, roads to avoid or potential
evacuation.
-
NOAA weather radios will provide additional
information.
Hazardous Materials (Chemicals)
Chemical spills can be dangerous. Be aware if you live or work near a facility that houses
chemicals. Know how to become informed of an emergency...
-
Tune in to local radio and television stations. Cox Communications has an emergency alert system that will provide immediate information on all cable
channels.
-
NOAA weather radios will also provide information.
-
Vulcan Chemicals, ATOFINA and Air Products utilize an "all call" telephone system. Homes and businesses within a 2-mile radius of these plants are automatically contacted with information or evacuation information.
