Manage Your Risks
Hazardous Materials (Chemicals)
Things you should know...
-
Determine if hazardous materials are stored near you. A Vulnerable Zone Indicator System (VZIS) exists to help you find out if your home, workplace or child's school could be affected by a chemical accident. This is available at
www.epa.gov/ceppo/vzis.htm or (800)
424-9346.
-
Sedgwick County has a local warning system -- stay tuned to local radio, television or the NOAA weather radio for
information.
-
Have a family emergency plan in place with information on how and when to "shelter-in-place."
Severe Weather (Tornadoes, Winter Storms)
-
Identify the outdoor warning device/siren closest to your
home.
-
Have a NOAA weather radio with a backup battery. If the weather looks bad, take it
along!
-
Know where your closest, safest shelter (safe room, basement, etc.) is
located.
-
Prepare an emergency kit (flashlight, radio with batteries, water, shoes and blankets) for your home and your car.
Flooding
-
Determine if you live near an area that might be prone to
flooding.
-
Identify what flood preparation options you have (evacuate, sand bags, etc.)
