Sedgwick County Fire District 1

Sedgwick County Fire District 1

Employment

THE MISSION OF SEDGWICK COUNTY FIRE DISTRICT 1 is to serve the public by protecting life and property, minimizing the impact of fire, and rapidly responding to medical emergencies, potential disasters or uncontrolled events that adversely affect the community and environment.

Sedgwick County is located in south central Kansas and is the second most populated county in the state.  It encompasses an area of 1,008 square miles with a population of over 450,000.  There are 20 cities within Sedgwick County, and Wichita, the largest city in Kansas, is the Sedgwick County seat.  Sedgwick County is home to a number of industries, the most notable of which are aviation-related and have earned the community the title of "Air Capital of the World."  Combined, Boeing, Cessna, Raytheon, and Bombardier Aerospace supply more than half of the world's general aviation and military aircraft.  And, Spirit Aero Systems along with Boeing produces two-thirds of the world's commercial airliners.  Other industries located in Sedgwick County include Koch Industries, The Coleman Company, OxyChem, Via Christi Regional Medical Center, and Wesley Medical Center.  Since 1954, McConnell Air Force Base has been a vital part of the Wichita community.  McConnell AFB is home to the 22nd Air Refueling Wing of the Air Mobility Command, the 931st Air Refueling Group of the Air Force Reserve and 184th Air Refueling Wing of the Kansas Air National Guard.

Sedgwick County is served by nine county fire stations located strategically throughout the county.  All stations are staffed 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year by full-time trained firefighters and Emergency Medical Technicians.

Sedgwick County firefighters’ primary job is to rescue people from burning or collapsing structures and provide medical first response.  Sedgwick County firefighters also respond to Hazmat spills, and conduct water, high angle and confined space rescue operations.

Hazardous Materials Team

The Hazardous Materials Team is a joint effort of the Sedgwick County and Wichita Fire Departments to provide a team of firefighters trained to respond to hazardous material emergencies anywhere in Sedgwick County. The team assists with awareness level training for Sedgwick County law enforcement personnel.

Technical Rescue Team

The Technical Rescue Team is a specialized team of firefighters trained to respond to emergency calls requiring confined space, high angle, trench cave-in, swift water/flood or building collapse rescues. The Technical Rescue Teams of Sedgwick County Fire District 1 and Wichita Fire Department respond jointly to provide the highest degree of expertise available in the Sedgwick County area.

Emergency Medical Response

All emergency response personnel are trained (at a minimum) to the level of Emergency Medical Technician; and the firefighters and lieutenants are trained to drive Sedgwick County ambulances to assist Sedgwick County Emergency Medical Service in the delivery of patient care. CPR classes and medical training are provided to civic groups and government agencies. Free blood pressure screenings are available at all stations.

Recruit Academy

The recruit academy is six weeks in length and consists of approximately 300 hours of training. Upon completion of the academy, each recruit firefighter participates in a public graduation ceremony and is presented with a badge and a certificate of completion by the Fire Chief. Once the recruit graduates from the academy, he/she is given a shift and station assignment. The recruit’s training continues throughout the first year with station crews and through other District activities. The academy approach has proved to be a very successful way to bring in newly-hired firefighters and prepare them for the demands of life in the station.
