One out of
every eight women will develop breast cancer at some point during her life.
An estimated 4,600 women will die from cervical cancer each year in the
United States. The good news is routine screening and prompt treatment can
reduce deaths from breast and cervical.
The Early
Detection Works program pays for clinical breast exams, mammograms, Pap
tests and diagnostic services. Call the Early Detection Works program at

Healthy Babies Community Forums
Healthy Babies community forums are held on the second Wednesday of every
month. They begin at 1pm and are held at 209 W. 21st St. N. (New Beginnings
Seventh-Day Adventist Church). These events provide education, free
childcare, refreshments, and door prizes. They are provided for the entire
community. We have discussed Car Seat Safety, Breastfeeding Basics,
Nutrition and Fitness, Infant Massage, and Finance at previous forums.
Tobacco
The Tobacco Use
Prevention Program (TUPP) of the Sedgwick County Health Department provides
resources and technical assistance to community coalitions like Tobacco Free
Wichita and Derby Youth Leadership Council. TUPP focuses on four priority
areas:
-
Preventing the initiation of tobacco use among young people
-
Promoting quitting
-
Eliminating nonsmokers' exposure to secondhand smoke
-
Identifying and eliminating the disparities related to tobacco use and its
effects among different population groups.
STD/HIV (Sexually Transmitted Diseases &
Human Immunodeficiency Virus)
The Health Promotion Unit provides STD/HIV
educational materials, conducts presentations and workshops, trains
professional and agency staff, and provides condoms free to the public and
community agencies.
The development and implementation of Health
Education programs are available to promote safer sexual behaviors with
populations in "at-risk" situations, in collaboration with healthcare
providers, community-based organizations, and community members. These
programs include partner notification services, community outreach services,
community interventions, health campaigns, health education and occupation
exposure continuing education.
