Tuberculosis (TB) is a serious infectious disease, which is spread almost exclusively by airborne transmission of bacteria. Although the disease can affect any site in the body, it most often affects the lungs. A person with untreated infectious TB will infect approximately 29% of people who come in close contact and 15% of other contacts. Our greatest concern is the threat of TB to children and the problem of outbreaks of multi-drug resistant TB (MDRTB). One of the greater causes of this drug resistance is the non-compliant infected client
who is difficult to track and monitor.
Kansas reported 77 cases of active tuberculosis disease in 2000 (2.9 per
100,000 population), up from 69 cases of active tuberculosis in 1999 (2.6 per
100,000 population). In 1998, Kansas reported 56 cases (2.1 per 100,000
population).
In Kansas during 2000, the state’s major metropolitan areas were home to
the most reported cases of tuberculosis. Sedgwick County reported the highest
number of new cases of TB disease in 2000, with 28 (6.2 cases per 100,000
population).
