Flu Shots
Flu shots for the general public will be made available on October 25, 2007.
Persons who are considered high-risk are strongly encouraged to get a flu shot. Those who fall into the high-risk category includes individuals who are:
- persons ages >65
- residents of long-term-care facilities
- people aged 2-64 years with heart disease, asthma, diabetes, kidney disorders, blood disorders, weakened immune systems or conditions that can weaken the respiratory system.
- children older than 6 months
- pregnant women
- health-care personnel who provide direct patient care
- household contacts and out-of-home caregivers of children ages <6 months
Shots will be given at Clinical Services, 2716 West Central, during hours of operation: Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday from 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM and Thursday Noon - 6:00 PM.
The Health Department can directly bill for several insurance providers including Medicare. Please bring your insurance card. The cost for flu shots is $30 for persons 9 years of age and older and $15 for persons 6 months to 8 years of age. Vaccine is also available for those who qualify for the Vaccines for Children Program.
In addition, there are other ways to protect yourself from the flu. The Sedgwick County Health Department offers these suggestions to help keep yourself and those around you healthy:
- Cover mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing.
- Wash hands often, especially before touching food, face, nose, eyes or mouth.
- Stay home if you're sick.
- Limit visits to hospitals and nursing homes.
- If you become ill, consult your primary care physician or health care provider.
