August 7, 2013
Today, the Board of County Commissioners adopted the 2014 Budget. This sets the financial plan in motion for how we will deliver services in 2014. Despite the past financial challenges, we have a strong financial condition. Fortunately we have not had to make significant service changes as we have in the past – we will be able to continue to provide the range of services that citizens have come to expect and rely on every day.
In addition, we are able to provide programs differently to be “responsive to the changing needs of our community.” We are funding a mental health pod in the jail, to provide enhanced services and security for those with mental illness. We are adding personnel and funding for equipment maintenance for the Elections Office, for seamless voting experiences on election day. We are providing funding for the Sedgwick County Zoo and Exploration Place, to help with capital and maintenance needs for these county-owned facilities. And, we are creating a shared service model by having Human Services assume billing responsibility for EMS services.
I am also pleased that the Commission approved the salary adjustment of 2.5% for our pay for performance pool for 2014. This allows us to recognize and reward employees for the delivery of quality public services. As well, with our Compensation/Classification Study underway this week, the Commission approved the contingency funding for 2014 to implement any changes to our structure. These are vital to helping us attract and retain the best employees – it helps us continue to be an employer of choice in the community.
I am proud of the work we get to do in serving citizens. Some days are difficult. Some days are very fulfilling. I hope that you are able to find great value and worth in serving others, and in providing excellent customer service. Thank you for the work you do and for choosing to be a part of our Sedgwick County team.
