To Protect, To Serve

Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office
Support Division

Captain Greg Schauner
Division Commander

The Support Division was created on November 26, 2006 as the result of the Sheriff’s Office’s reorganization.  Individual units of the division had previously been under the command of the Technical Division, and were consolidated in the newly formed Support Division because their functions interact directly with, and are supportive of, all units within the Sheriff’s Office.  The various responsibilities and activities of the Support Division are outlined below in a listing of its component sections.

Records Section

The Records Section, operated 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, is the central repository for many of the official documents and records generated during the normal course of business of the Sheriff’s Office.  These records include the criminal history of individuals, reports of criminal offenses, reports of traffic accidents, Protection From Abuse orders that have been served, and many others.  This section is additionally charged with entering and maintaining all information regarding wanted persons, missing persons, stolen property and other data placed in the nation-wide NCIC (National Crime Information Center) computer system and the state-wide wanted persons computer files.  Records personnel are also responsible for the transcription of reports that have been dictated by deputies.  2006 also saw the addition of new duties for Records personnel, such as the semi-annual photographing of registered offenders and the updating of their records, and the partial processing of concealed carry handgun permit applications.  The Records Section provides various copies of reports, mug shots, and other information to the public, insurance companies, lawyers, news media and others in compliance with the Kansas Open Records Act, as well.

Property, Evidence & Supply Section

The Property and Evidence Supply Section is a combination of the former Property Section and the Central Supply function, which had previously been a part of the Training Section.  The responsibilities of this section fall into two major areas.

The first of these areas is the storage, inventory, safekeeping and proper disposal of all evidence, found property and personal property that is collected in the normal activities of the Sheriff’s Office.  Evidence is also transported for forensic examination, sales of seized property are scheduled, and arrangements are made for the special storage of property or evidence for other agencies such as the Department of Revenue, Secret Service, etc.  Another responsibility is the storage of personal property of inmates who have been sent from the county jail to state prisons, when a friend or relative of the inmate has been unable or unwilling to take the property.

The second main area is that of ordering, issuing, maintaining an inventory of, and issuing various items of uniforms and equipment.  Deputies are given their initial issue of uniforms by this section, and receive replacement items as well.  Selected items of equipment, such as batons, handcuffs and flashlights are also part of the inventory maintained by the section.

Training Section

Like the division as a whole, the Training Section is responsible for several functions.  Recruiting job applicants and processing them through the entire hiring process is one of this section’s duties.  As a result of reorganization, two deputies were assigned to this section to be background investigators, and should eventually conduct all background investigations of applicants (freeing detectives from this duty).  The Training Section presents several basic training academies a year, training newly hired deputy applicants and detention applicants in the essential job skills they will need to perform their jobs.  This training is done in compliance with applicable state mandates.  For commissioned (sworn) personnel, the Training Section ensures that each employee is provided with a minimum of 40 hours of in-service training every year as required by the State of Kansas.  The firearms range is also a function of the Training Section.  Deputy recruits are given their basic firearms instruction here, continuing in-service training is provided for deputies, and required firearms qualifications are conducted at the range as necessary.
