The Reserve Unit of the Sheriff’s Office worked a total of 8,702 volunteer hours in 2006. These hours were spent in patrol, warrants, investigations, tag enforcement, detention, training and special assignments. The hours worked by the Reserve Unit are equivalent to over 4 full-time Sheriff’s deputies and have a value of nearly $200,000 for the citizens of Sedgwick County. The Reserve assisted the Sheriff’s Office, Wichita Police Department and the Kansas Highway Patrol on sobriety check lanes and saturation patrols. The Reserve also provided assistance to major warrants sweeps involving the Sheriff’s Office, Wichita Police and the Drug Enforcement Agency. Special assignments included community fairs at Cheney, Kechi, Mulvane; the McConnell Air Force Base Open House and numerous fund raisers including the KAKE Wichita Marathon, Link 4 Life Run, and the Mid-West Wine Fest.
Who We Are
The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Reserve is a volunteer organization established in 1956 as an unarmed auxiliary to assist the Sheriff in times of emergency. Today, the Reserve has commissioned, armed deputies who assist Sheriff Gary Steed with day-to-day as well as emergency operations. A part-time deputy appointed by Sheriff Gary Steed commands the Reserve. Major David Warren (commander), Captain Marc Vanderford (deputy commander), and the full-time commissioned staff of the Sheriff’s Office supervise the activities of Reserve deputies. As commissioned deputies of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office, Reserve deputies are sworn to protect the life, property and rights of all citizens of Sedgwick County.
Candidates for the Reserve must: 1) be 21 years of age, 2) be in good physical condition and capable of carrying out strenuous law enforcement activities, 3) be a U.S. and Kansas citizen, 4) complete a written application, 5) agree to and pass extensive background, psychological and drug screening tests, 6) posses a valid Kansas driver’s license, 7) posses a high school diploma or GED, and 8) complete a comprehensive training academy. After admission to and successful completion of the training academy, Reserve deputies continue their training through practical application of their new knowledge in patrol, warrant, detention, courtroom security and other law enforcement activities. As Reserve deputies grow in knowledge and experience, they have an opportunity to test for promotions to supervisory positions (sergeant, lieutenant) within the Reserve.
Reserve deputies are required to provide no less than 20 hours of volunteer service during each month and attend monthly meetings. Additionally, Reserve deputies must complete annual in-service training requirements to keep their skills sharp and to stay abreast of changes in law enforcement technology and procedures. The monthly meetings provide training and information exchange opportunities.
Reserve deputies support the core values established by Sheriff Gary Steed. Integrity, Duty, Ethics, Attitude, Leadership and Service guide the Reserve deputies in their every endeavor. The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Reserve is looking for men and women of good moral character with an interest in volunteer public service. Interested individuals should complete a Reserve Application and return it to the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Reserve located on the 3rd floor of the Sedgwick County Court House, 525 North Main Street, Wichita, KS on Mondays or Wednesdays between 6:30 and 8:30 pm. Persons wishing to deliver applications should report to the security check point located on the North (Elm Street) side of the Court House. Applications may also be mailed to:
