Sheriff Gary Steed
Sheriff Gary Steed began his career with the Sedgwick County
Sheriff's Office in 1974 as a deputy sheriff assigned to the
Patrol Division and has worked his way up through the ranks.
During his time with the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office he has
served in, or worked with, almost every area of the department
including Patrol, Investigations, Detention, Training, and
Internal Affairs.
He is dedicated to maintaining the Department as a model of professionalism and integrity. Providing the best training for sheriff personnel is a high priority. He was appointed the first commander of the Wichita-Sedgwick County Law Enforcement Training Center. He also served as a member of the team assigned to help design and construct the addition to the Sedgwick County Detention Facility.
In 1998 Steed attained the rank of Major and was assigned to command the Operations Bureau that is comprised of the Patrol and Investigations Divisions. Following that assignment, he was appointed Commander of the Detention Bureau. The Detention Bureau is the largest bureau in the department and has overall responsibility for more than 300 personnel and over 1,000 inmates. That assignment was followed early in 2000 with a promotion to Undersheriff.
Sheriff Steed was elected in November of 2000 to succeed retiring Sheriff Mike Hill and he was sworn into office on January 7, 2001.
