The Wichita Public Schools continues implementing the Yellow
Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program in all secondary schools.
Southeast and North High School were targeted during the 2004-05
school year. Several middle schools have also been trained. Over 100
individual classroom presentations of Yellow Ribbon have been
conducted this year alone.
The Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program focuses on providing
education about depression and suicide prevention, and about
teaching students that they can be an important link in the life of
a friend, family member or even themselves in times of despair and
hopelessness.
Presentations on the Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program are
often requested by churches, youth groups, schools and other
community agencies and we respond whenever we are asked. This year
we have presented at Good Shepherd, the Wichita Children’s Home,
Street Outreach, and the Juvenile Detention Center as well as other
locales.
The Wichita Public Schools also invites other school district
support staff to observe and shadow when Yellow Ribbon is presented
at schools. By training other districts we hope to further the
outreach that Yellow Ribbon provides for our youth and community.
We
track the effectiveness of the Yellow Ribbon program through the use
of a pre and post test survey, the results of which are showing that
the program is well received by students and staff, and is
accomplishing our goal of providing education and awareness about
preventing death by suicide.
