Frequently Asked Questions

  1. I am on active duty in the military but the vehicle is in my spouse’s name.  Am I required to pay taxes on the vehicle?

    Answer:
    Yes.  A vehicle is only exempt from taxes when the active duty military member's name is on the vehicle title.

  2. I am in the military but a Kansas resident.  Am I required to pay taxes on my vehicle?

    Answer:
    If both you and the vehicle are stationed in Kansas, the vehicle is taxable. If you are a resident of Kansas but stationed in another state, the vehicle is exempt.  Vehicle registration fees still apply.

  3. I am in the military.  What is required to renew or register my vehicle in Kansas?

    Answer:
      Vehicle registration fees are required. Military personnel are exempt from Kansas taxes if they have a Military Affidavit signed by a commissioned officer. You will need the following documents:

    * The affidavit, listing each vehicle being registered or renewed
    * Military identification card
    * Proof of insurance
    * A current Leave and Earnings Statement (LES)

    If titling the vehicle in Kansas for the first time, a Vehicle Inspection will be required by the Highway Patrol Inspection Division. If the vehicle is not in the state, you will need to follow the TR65 Instructions

    Once you have registered in Kansas, remove all other states’ plates from your vehicle.  Effective July 1, 2008, it is illegal to display front plates from another state with back plates from Kansas.  You may be stopped and ticketed.

  4. I am a military dependent. Am I exempt from paying property tax?

    Answer: No, only active duty members of the military are exempt, and must be the registered owner on the title.

  5. Why do I pay taxes on my leased vehicle when I’m in the military?

    Answer: The leased vehicle is legally owned by the leasing company.  That company is not exempt from taxes.

  6. I have been transferred to another state but my vehicle is registered in Kansas. I do not claim Kansas as my home state of record. My tags need to be renewed. How do I renew them in Kansas?

    Answer: If you left the state, you are not eligible to renew in Kansas. You have to register in the state where you are stationed.

    Military personnel who do not claim Kansas as their home state of residence and are not stationed in Kansas on active duty are not eligible for Kansas title and registration.
