Juvenile Intake and Assessment Center (JIAC)

700 S. Hydraulic, Wichita, KS 67211

This 24/7 program receives referrals from law enforcement agencies and the district attorney's staff. However, JIAC is willing to offer referrals to families that call in for help.

The center works with an average of 500 referred youth each month. When the youth arrives at JIAC, an intake questionnaire is done. This consists of gathering information about the youth concerning family, school history, peer relationships, substance abuse, and mental and physical health. An assessment is done from this information in consultation with law enforcement and the youth's parents. Based on this process, recommendations and referrals are made that could be helpful for the youth.

The strategy is to intervene early and prevent youth from getting more deeply involved in the juvenile justice system.

Judge James V. Riddel Boys and Girls Alternative Program - A Systemic Approach To Reducing Recidivism

At the July 22, 2015 Board of County Commission meeting a new approach and program was approved as an alternative to reopening the former JRBR residential facility at Lake Afton. The new program builds upon and expands delivery of crime-reducing programming and best practices in family engagement to local system-involved youth and their families. The new program was named by commissioners in honor of the late Judge James V. Riddel, and to carry-on the vision of the community program he was instrumental in establishing in 1961.
