Archived: Emergency Communications Launches Fire Dispatch Priority System
(Sedgwick County, Kan.) – Sedgwick County Emergency Communications has launched its Fire Dispatch Priority System (FDPS) to further support the processing of fire-related calls.
FDPS is a structured tool that enhances existing operations by guiding 911 call takers through key questions to efficiently gather critical information. It also supports the delivery of pre-arrival instructions when appropriate, such as how to safely exit a building, and allows fire departments to align response configurations with the most accurate and up-to-date information available.
“This enhancement builds upon an already strong and effective system,” said Elora Forshee, Director of Emergency Communications. “Our goal is to continue refining and strengthening service delivery while maintaining the high level of service our community and public safety partners expect.”
In preparation for implementation, all Emergency Communications personnel successfully completed the International Academy of Emergency Fire Dispatch (IAEFD) certification course, along with system-specific training and hands-on scenario practice. Staff will continue ongoing education and recertify every two years.
“The Fire Dispatch Priority System is a step forward in how we respond to emergency calls,” said Doug Williams, Sedgwick County Fire District 1 Chief. “By providing callers with clear, lifesaving instructions, our crews can arrive to scenes better prepared to act quickly and effectively. This system strengthens the partnership between dispatchers and local agencies, ultimately improving safety for our communities and first responders.”
Sedgwick County Emergency Communications remains committed to delivering reliable, high-quality service and continuously enhancing its support of the public and first responders.
