Prescribed burns planned at Sedgwick County Park Nov. 17 postponed

UPDATE: The prescribed burns planned for Monday, Nov. 17, are postponed due to forecasted winds. SCFD1 will provide an update when burns are able to be conducted.

(Sedgwick County, Kan.) – Sedgwick County Fire District 1 (SCFD1) is coordinating with staff at the Sedgwick County Park to conduct prescribed burns Monday, Nov. 17, 2025, from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m., weather permitting. During this time, the park will remain open to the public, but barricades along walking paths and other areas will keep visitors away from the burn sites. SCFD1 personnel will be present to ensure safety and to monitor throughout the day.

The prescribed fires will eliminate overgrowth and weeds at multiple sites on the property, with the sledding hill serving as the main target area. Controlled burns are an important part of park maintenance and ecosystem management.

SCFD1 will evaluate the weather early Monday morning, Nov. 17, to determine whether to proceed with the prescribed burns. If weather conditions are deemed safe for the prescribed burns, Sedgwick County will post signs in the area to notify residents. Sedgwick County Emergency Communications and Emergency Management departments are also aware of this burn plan.

Those who live nearby and suffer from allergies or asthma are advised to stay indoors and keep the windows shut.
