Sedgwick County Division of Finance Earns AAA Rating

(Sedgwick County, Kan.) – The Sedgwick County Division of Finance has received a ‘AAA’ rating from S&P Global Ratings, the highest ranking offered by the credit agency.

The ratings report credited Sedgwick County’s “consistent financial performance, healthy reserves and liquidity, exceptional financial management and transparency, and manageable debt and liabilities profile.” S&P also determined a stable outlook for Sedgwick County, noting conservatively managed operations and an expanding local economy.

“The recurrence of this rating by Sedgwick County since 2010 is the result of responsible spending and planning by Commissioners,” said Lindsay Poe Rousseau, Sedgwick County Chief Financial Officer. “Our Finance team consistently adheres to high standards, implements best practices and strives for high-quality performance. I’m grateful for the incredible work done by the Division of Finance and for the support from the County Manager and Sedgwick County leadership.”

Other factors noted by S&P include:

  • A broad and diverse local economy with an expanding presence of aerospace and industrial manufacturing operations
  • A substantial base of employment and economic output generated by higher education, health care, military, and government
  • Expected expansion in population and economic output due to ongoing developments
  • Robust budgetary controls and oversight, including quarterly reporting to Commissioners
  • Institutional framework that is “stronger than the portfolio average”

Sedgwick County is one of two counties in Kansas to receive a AAA rating and just one of 110 counties nationwide with a AAA rating and a stable outlook.
