Sedgwick County Encourages Public Feedback with 2027 Budget Simulator

(Sedgwick County, Kan.) — Sedgwick County has launched its 2027 Budget Simulator that gives citizens a chance to explore and influence how property tax-supported funds are allocated. This interactive, hands-on simulation, powered by Polco’s Balancing Act platform, is part of the County’s commitment to building public trust, continued transparency and implementing innovative solutions.

The Budget Simulator gives participants a simplified overview of how funds are distributed across Sedgwick County’s departments and supported programs. The simulator allows residents to grasp how decisions made throughout the budget process affect the goal of making the most of taxpayer dollars.

Citizens can access the simulator online to try their hand at balancing the County’s budget. They will be given options that allow for an increase, decrease or continuation of normal funding for every County-supported operation, along with real-life write-ups for how those decisions will affect the department or program. As users make trade-offs, they gain insights into the challenges of governing with limited resources and competing priorities in public safety, health, infrastructure and more. Public feedback will be considered when shaping the 2027 budget.

“This simulation allows residents to gain a deeper understanding and provide critical feedback about Sedgwick County’s budgetary priorities,” Sedgwick County Manager Tom Stolz said. “We remain committed to collaboration with our communities and invite the public to voice their opinion on how Sedgwick County government should be shaped.”

This initiative builds on national best practices identified by experts like the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) and reflects a growing trend in local governments using technology to modernize civic engagement. The 2026 Budget Simulator earned Polco’s 2025 Best in Governance Award.
