Seat Belt Campaign Focuses on Consequences of Not Buckling Up
SEDGWICK COUNTY, Kan. — The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is joining law enforcement agencies across Kansas and the nation in the annual “Click It or Ticket” campaign to encourage drivers and passengers to wear seat belts and reduce preventable injuries and deaths on Kansas roadways.
The national enforcement campaign runs from May 17 through June 1, 2026, and coincides with the start of the busy summer travel season surrounding Memorial Day weekend.
Deputies will increase patrols and seat belt enforcement efforts throughout Sedgwick County during the campaign period. The initiative aims to remind motorists that wearing a seat belt remains one of the simplest and most effective ways to survive a crash.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, seat belts help keep occupants secure inside a vehicle during a collision. People who fail to wear seat belts risk being ejected from the vehicle during a crash, an outcome that is often fatal.
The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office encourages drivers and passengers to follow these seat belt safety practices:
- Wear the shoulder belt across the center of the chest and away from the neck.
- Position the lap belt low across the hips, not across the stomach.
- Never place the shoulder belt behind the back or under the arm.
- Secure children in age and size-appropriate car seats or booster seats until they can properly fit in an adult seat belt.
