Three-Vehicle Injury Crash Under Investigation Near Derby

SEDGWICK COUNTY, Kan. — The Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office Major Crash Team continues to investigate a three-vehicle injury crash that occurred Tuesday evening east of Derby.

At approximately 7:34 p.m. June 2, 2026, Sedgwick County Sheriff's deputies and other emergency responders were dispatched to the intersection of 79th Street South and Greenwich Road for a reported injury crash.

Preliminary investigation indicates an 18-year-old Derby man was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee eastbound on 79th Street South when he failed to stop at a posted stop sign and entered the intersection. The Jeep struck a southbound GMC Yukon occupied by five people. Investigators are also looking into the possibility that use of a mobile device may have been a contributing factor in the crash.

The impact caused the Yukon to spin and collide with a northbound Lexus GX460 occupied by two people.

The driver of the Yukon, a 66-year-old man from Mustang, Oklahoma, and the front seat passenger, a 76-year-old man from Indiahoma, Oklahoma, suffered minor injuries and did not require transportation to a hospital.

Three other Yukon occupants sustained more serious injuries. A 71-year-old Mustang, Oklahoma, man was transported to a local hospital in serious condition. A 61-year-old Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, man and a 74-year-old Edmond, Oklahoma, man were transported by EMS to local hospitals in critical condition.

The occupants of the Lexus, a 37-year-old Derby man and a 39-year-old Derby woman, suffered minor injuries and were not transported to a hospital.

The 18-year-old Jeep driver was not transported by EMS.

The two men who sustained critical injuries remain hospitalized and are improving.

The Major Crash Team continues to investigate the crash.
