(Sedgwick County, Kan.) – Earlier today, the Sedgwick County Health Department (SCHD) reported a confirmed case of measles in an unvaccinated child. SCHD investigates measles cases and informs the public when they could be at risk for exposure.

To prevent further spread of the disease, SCHD is asking anyone who visited the below location during the times listed to monitor for symptoms through May 20. If symptoms occur, contact SCHD at 316-660-5558 for further evaluation.

SCHD does not provide measles testing for the general public. They will only test known contacts of confirmed measles cases through the disease investigation process.

Measles is a respiratory disease caused by a virus. The measles virus is highly contagious and is spread through the air by breathing, coughing, or sneezing. The signs and symptoms of measles typically begin one to two weeks after someone is exposed to an infected person. Symptoms include:

  • High fever (may spike to more than 104°F)
  • Cough
  • Runny nose
  • Red, watery eyes
  • Tiny white spots with bluish-white centers found inside the mouth (Koplik spots)
  • Blotchy rash on the skin which spreads from head down to feet
