Register of Deeds launches Notary Fraud Alert

(Sedgwick County, Kan.) – The Sedgwick County Register of Deeds has launched a free tool, Notary Fraud Alert, to help public notaries monitor potentially fraudulent activity.

The free online subscription service allows all public notaries to monitor their name in the county’s official land records. Subscribers will be alerted at the notice of potentially fraudulent recordings appearing under the public notary’s name or seal.

“With cases of mortgage and document fraud involving stolen notary credentials on the rise, this tool offers an important safeguard,” Sedgwick County Register of Deeds Tonya Buckingham said. “While it doesn’t prevent fraud, it provides an early warning system so notaries can act quickly if something suspicious is detected.”

Notary fraud can occur when someone forges a signature, misuses a notary seal or records a document without the required presence or authorization. These actions can lead to property theft, financial loss and legal complications. Notary Fraud Alert is offered at no cost and is part of Sedgwick County’s ongoing commitment to supporting local notaries while strengthening trust in the public recordkeeping systems. Sedgwick County is the first in the state of Kansas to launch this tool.
