Once installed, the new land records system will benefit Sedgwick County residents and businesses in several ways. The software, with its enhanced search capabilities, is user-friendly and makes it quick and easy to find public documents on file, like real estate deeds, mortgages, liens and easements. By requiring payment for remote online access of documents, the system establishes a traceable record for each transaction. The implementation of fees and subscription services for accessing land records, while not preventing downloads entirely, serves as a potential deterrent to fraud.

The new system will operate on two search platforms. Laredo is a subscription-based search engine that offers five monthly packages priced from $50-$150. Tapestry is web-based and accessible by computer, phone or tablet. Customers pay $8.75 per use, plus $1 per page of documents downloaded. This new pricing will take effect in February 2025. The Register of Deeds Office will continue to offer free help at its two locations to customers who come in person to search for a document. Printed copies cost $1 per page.

“I’m so excited to offer this upgraded records system, and I appreciate the public’s patience during this transition period,” said Tonya Buckingham, Register of Deeds. ”I’m confident the added convenience and safeguards will be worth the wait.”
