(Sedgwick County, Kan.) – On Tuesday, June 10, 2025, Sedgwick County Public Works will install several safety features to an intersection in northwest Sedgwick County prone to accidents. Crews will convert the two-way stop at 167th St. West and 21st St. North to a four-way stop and add other traffic controls, including:

  • White stop bars on the asphalt next to the stop signs
  • Central traffic signal flashing red in all directions
  • Ground-in rumble strips on 21st Street to warn drivers from the east or west of the impending stop

“The goal of traffic management is to use the least restrictive controls necessary to safely manage traffic,” said County Engineer Lynn Packer, Director of Sedgwick County Public Works. “However, driver behavior remains a challenge at this intersection, with too many motorists failing to reduce speed and remain attentive. We believe stopping traffic on 21st Street is the appropriate next step to reduce serious crashes, as northwest Sedgwick County continues to develop and traffic increases.”

Public Works scheduled this project after the school year and Memorial Day holiday weekend, so drivers would face lighter traffic while adjusting to the new four-way stop.

These improvements are the latest in an ongoing effort by Sedgwick County to address safety concerns at this intersection through targeted traffic control measures. Earlier adjustments were designed to be less restrictive on 21st Street traffic, but conditions have evolved to the point that more comprehensive solutions are warranted. County engineers will closely monitor their impact and assess whether additional restrictions may be necessary.
