Board of County Commissioners

·         Sedgwick County Commissioners reappointed Reverend Dr. Pamela M. Hughes and appointed Seth Dewer to the Sedgwick County Community Corrections Advisory Board.

·         Sedgwick County Commissioners recognized 11 graduates of Project SEARCH.

·         BoCC approved a redevelopment district at 69th St. N. and Broadway and authorized the use of Tax Increment Financing. The project will create a regional water detention basin and allow for a $70 million private investment in workforce housing and light industrial development.

·         Commissioners approved ZON2025-00057: zone change request in the county from RR Rural Residential to SF-20 Single-Family Residential, generally located south of West 21st St. N. and west of N. 263rd St. W. with a protective overlay that includes: a maximum number of 10 lots; a minimum lot size of 2 acres; and no more than one dwelling allowed per lot.

·         BoCC approved the submission of a grant application in the amount of $444,468 from the U.S. Department of Justice for the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistant Grant Program and the authorized budget authority until the conclusion of the grant term.

·         Sedgwick County Commissioners approved the recommendations of the Board of Bids and Contracts’ regular meeting on April 16, 2026.

·         No binding action was taken during an executive session.

Upcoming Events

·         Sedgwick County encourages public feedback on its financial future with the launch of the 2027 Budget Simulator. Residents can provide input on their priorities regarding potential investments for more than 45 departments with just a few clicks. Sedgwick County Budget Simulator

·         Sedgwick County Environmental Resources will host its free electronic waste collection event from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. April 23-25 and April 30-May 2, 2026, at the Sedgwick County West Yard, 4701 S. West St. Acceptable items include computers, laptops, televisions and more. Electronic Waste Events

·         The Wichita Foundation Amphitheater at Exploration Place will begin hosting RiverFlix for the 2026 season on April 24. Bring your blankets, snacks and a sense of adventure, with food trucks and seating opening at 6 p.m. The event is free and open to all ages. The movie on April 24 will be SING. RiverFlix at Exploration Place

·         The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office will partner with the Drug Enforcement Administration to host National Prescription Drug Take Back Day on April 25 from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. at Sedgwick County Zoo, 5555 W. Zoo Blvd, Household Hazardous Waste Facility, 801 W. Stillwell and Oaklawn Activity Center, 4904 S. Clifton. Other locations are available throughout Sedgwick County. Deputies will collect tablets, capsules, patches, and other solid forms of prescription drugs. Collection sites will also accept liquid medications, including cough syrup, if they remain sealed in their original containers with caps tightly secured to prevent leakage. The service is free, and no identification is required. Take Back Day

·         Sedgwick County COMCARE will host a National Children’s Mental Health Awareness Day celebration on Saturday, May 2, from 11 a.m.-2p.m. at 1937 N. Woodlawn Blvd. The event will feature an assortment of fun activities including games, crafts, face painting, food and resource booths full of information to help raise awareness.
