Sheriff’s Office Provides Update in Lake Afton Death Investigation

SEDGWICK COUNTY, Kan. — The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is providing an update in the ongoing investigation into the death of Ian Alexander Shelton, whose body was recovered from Lake Afton earlier this year.

The Sedgwick County Regional Forensic Science Center filed its final autopsy report March 19, 2026, in Sedgwick County District Court. The report confirms Shelton’s cause of death as drowning, and the manner of death has been ruled an accident. The full report, which includes toxicology findings, is available for public inspection through District Court under case SG-2026-MV-000222.

Despite the manner of death being ruled an accident, the Sheriff’s Office is continuing to carefully review the circumstances surrounding Shelton’s disappearance and death. Detectives are working to ensure all details have been thoroughly examined. Once that work is complete, the case will be presented to the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office for review.
