Sheriff’s Office Updates Inmate Book Policy

WICHITA, Kan. — The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office has updated its policy on books at the Adult Detention Facility, replacing the temporary suspension announced Feb. 5, 2026.

Under the new policy, inmates may receive paperback books, but only under strict guidelines designed to maintain safety and security.

Key points:

  • Books must come directly from approved sources, such as a publisher or authorized vendor. Books sent by individuals or third-party sellers will be rejected.
  • Paperback books are allowed, but must be new and meet all requirements.
  • All books are inspected and may be rejected if they pose a safety or security risk.
  • Used books are not allowed, including those from resale or thrift sellers.

The Sheriff’s Office will continue to review materials to ensure compliance with facility rules.
