Update: Deputy Struck by Vehicle While Investigating Crash
SEDGWICK COUNTY, Kan. – The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office is providing an update on a deputy who was struck by a vehicle Thursday night while investigating a crash at K-42 Highway and Maize Road.
At 9:34 p.m. on June 12, deputies responded to a report of a non-injury crash at the intersection of K-42 and Maize Road. At approximately 9:56 p.m., while outside his patrol vehicle and investigating the initial crash, a deputy was struck by a westbound pickup truck.
Sedgwick County EMS initially reported the deputy’s injuries as critical but later upgraded his condition to serious upon transport to a Wichita hospital. The deputy, a 39-year-old male who has been with the Sheriff’s Office since July 2023, continues to recover. He remains hospitalized but is alert and has been speaking with colleagues and family.
The driver of the pickup remained at the scene and is cooperating with authorities. Impairment is not believed to be a factor in the incident.
The Kansas Highway Patrol’s Critical Highway Accident Response Team (CHART) has taken over the investigation. The case remains under active investigation by KHP.
