Update on Missing Person Investigation – Ian Alexander Shelton

SEDGWICK COUNTY, Kan. — The Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate the disappearance of Ian Alexander Shelton, a 30-year-old man reported missing and considered endangered.

Detectives confirmed that Ian was at Lake Afton in the early morning hours of Dec. 3, 2025. He was outdoors in cold weather and was not dressed for the conditions, which increases concern for his safety. Detectives believe Ian may have been experiencing a mental health crisis at the time of his disappearance.

As part of the continuing investigation, the Sheriff’s Office is asking residents near Lake Afton, specifically those who live between 231st Street West and 263rd Street West, and between 31st Street South and 55th Street South, to assist by reviewing any available home surveillance. Detectives request that residents check doorbell cameras, security systems, and any recorded video from Dec. 3, 2025, between 2:15 a.m. and 2 p.m.

Residents in this area are also asked to check their property, including barns, sheds, garages, and other outbuildings, for anything unusual or for anyone who may have sought shelter during the cold weather.

Ian was known to be in a white 2012 Mazda Miata shortly before his disappearance. Detectives are not searching for the vehicle, but they are providing a photo as a point of reference for those who may have captured it on video. The photo is included on the attached poster.

Detectives continue to work hard to locate Ian and to get answers for his family. Anyone with information about Ian’s whereabouts is asked to call 911, the Investigations Division at 316-660-5300, or Wichita–Sedgwick County Crime Stoppers at 316-267-2111 or through the P3 Tips app.

The Sheriff’s Office will provide additional updates as they become available.

A poster for area residents is attached to this release.
