Sedgwick County Animal Control Mission

Protecting the health and safety of the community from dangers and nuisances caused by stray and/or threatening animals and ensuring the proper care and safety of animals.

Serving the Unincorporated Areas of Sedgwick County

Sedgwick County Animal Control serves areas outside city limits (unincorporated areas) and some cities/towns without their own services, including, Andale, Bel Aire, Bentley, Cheney, Garden Plain, Kechi, Peck, and Viola

The following provides information about our role, responsibilities, and how we support the community.

Respond to Animal Concerns

Animal Control responds to situations where animals may pose a safety concern or need immediate help. These are often the first reasons residents contact us, especially when animals are loose, injured, or acting aggressively.

  • Pick up stray or loose animals
  • Respond to reports of animal bites
  • Assist with injured or sick animals
  • Help with aggressive or dangerous animals

Enforce Animal Laws

Animal Control services and requirements are guided by Sedgwick County laws.

  • Enforce county rules for animal care and control 
  • Investigate animal cruelty or neglect
  • Enforce dangerous animal regulations
  • Help ensure pets are properly vaccinated and licensed

Respond to Stray and Loose Animals

A key part of Animal Control work is helping reunite pets with their owners and reducing risks caused by animals that are loose or unsupervised in the community.

  • Return stray pets to their owners when possible
  • Transport animals to the shelter
  • Help reduce risks to the community from loose or unsafe animals

Support Public Health and Safety

Animal Control helps protect the community from health risks related to animals, including disease exposure and environmental concerns involving deceased animals.

  • Investigate animal bites and rabies concerns
  • Help prevent the spread of disease
  • Remove animal carcasses from public areas

Provide Licensing and Community Support

Animal Control also supports responsible pet ownership by offering licensing services and connecting residents with information and community resources.

  • Issue dog licenses

  • Connect residents to shelters and adoption resources

Animal Care Advisory Board

The Animal Control Advisory Board works with Sedgwick County Animal Control to review operations, discuss community concerns, and recommend updates to county code and policies. Board members are animal advocates from across Sedgwick County who help represent community voices and ensure local interests and values are considered in decisions related to animal control services.

Regularly scheduled Advisory Board meetings are held on the second Thursday of every month from 6:15 to 8:00 p.m. and are open to public attendance. Meetings may be canceled or dates may be changed, as deemed necessary by the board. Please monitor this site for upcoming dates and agendas.
