About the Census

It's been 10 years, remind me, what is the Census?

Every 10 years, the federal government must count every person living in the United States and five U.S. territories per the U.S. Constitution, Art. 1, Sect. 2. Information gathered through this survey is used for several reasons, ensuring fair representation in elected offices and state and federal funding for certain programs.

Why is it important?

The Census plays a vital role in our community. Kansas receives over $6 billion annually from data gathered from the Census, don't lose out, be counted!

It ensures fair Congressional representation by determining how many seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives as well as the redistricting of the state legislature, county and city councils, and voting districts. Accurate census information is critical to planning for future growth, development, and social needs of Sedgwick County. State and federal funding for social and other programs are made, in part, on census data.

How do I participate?

It's never too early to talk about the Census. Share information with your friends, family, neighbors, and coworkers. You can also help us spread the word by joining our Complete Count Committee. Reach out to co-chair Janet Johnson for more information.

How do I complete the survey?

Each home will receive an invitation to respond to a short questionnaire —online, by phone, or by mail. Surveys will be sent in the spring of 2020 to reach everyone by Census Day, April 1.
