Additional Storms Cause Local Flooding

Heavy rains which began late yesterday afternoon and continued through this morning have caused flooding in and around communities in the county. Sedgwick County Emergency Management is monitoring, assessing, and responding to this weather.

From 7 p.m. Thursday evening through 7 a.m. this morning, Sedgwick County efforts related to the weather include:

  • Providing sandbags as requested by cities.
  • Responding to 19 submersion calls. A submersion call is when a person is trapped in the vehicle and cannot get out without assistance.
  • Responding to 64 flood reports.
  • Reporting five house fires.
  • Closing 10 roads due to flooding.

A GIS map of these calls is attached.

Residents are reminded to dial United Way’s information line 2 -1-1 for information and assistance with nonemergency needs related to their person or pets. Citizens who need sand bags may obtain them from the Sedgwick County Public Works yards (4701 S. West St. Building C) until 4:30 p.m. today. If sand bags are needed after hours or tomorrow, they should alert an emergency responder.

Weather forecasted for later today shows another round of storms in the late afternoon and evening hours which may include up to one inch of precipitation and large isolated hail. Intense rainfall and flooding is possible.

The safety and security of our citizens is a top priority for Sedgwick County. Please follow the organization on Twitter (@SedgwickCounty) or the free Sedgwick County app (available through the App Store and Google Play). Sedgwick County wants to remind everyone to call 9-1-1 in emergencies and to not drive into flooded roadways; remember to #TurnAroundDon’tDrown.
