Commissioner statements regarding U.S. District Court information

The following are statements from members of the Board of Sedgwick County Commissioners.

Commissioner Dave Unruh – District 1:
“We are reviewing the information the U.S. District Court provided publicly today,” said Commissioner Dave Unruh. “Every citizen has the right to express an opinion and every citizen has the right for due process. It’s important to follow the legal process.”

Commission Chairman David Dennis – District 3:
“We have learned about the U.S. District Court action today and only know what the U.S. District Court has shared publicly,” said Commission Chairman David Dennis. “As elected officials, we will continue to monitor and consult with the proper authorities about any implications to Sedgwick County while also recognizing due process is important for any citizen. Sedgwick County will support anything the U.S. Attorney’s Office needs or requires during their process.”

Commissioner Richard Ranzau – District 4:
“On a daily basis, I fight to protect the taxpayer and to ensure that citizens can trust their government. Today’s announcement is disappointing and heartbreaking -- but not surprising.

Mr. O'Donnell's time in elective office has been over shadowed by investigations and questionable judgement. I have been deeply troubled by Mr. O'Donnell's repeated efforts to use his position to help his friends and campaign contributors. This is why I have opposed and spoken out against his actions on numerous occasions. In light of Mr. O'Donnell's indictment, I call on him to resign immediately so the Commission can begin to rebuild trust with our community.

My constituents should know that I remain committed to maintaining their trust by always standing up for what is right, even if I stand alone.”

Commissioner Jim Howell – District 5:
“We have serious work to do as commissioners and as far as I’m concerned, my colleagues and I need to stay focused on our business,” said Commissioner Jim Howell. “These allegations have nothing to do with Commissioner O’Donnell serving alongside us here today; the allegations are not a commission issue but a personal one. We need to have mutual respect for all members of the Board of County Commissioners. I have faith in the justice system.”
