Updated: County Commission Accepts County Manager’s Resignation, Appoints Interim

The Board of Sedgwick County Commissioners voted today to accept County Manager Michael Scholes resignation, effective November 30. On a 3 to 2 vote, Commissioners approved a mutually agreed settlement.   

Scholes was appointed the county manager in September 2015. 

“Both parties have agreed that it was in Sedgwick County’s and Mr. Scholes’ best interest to part ways.” said Chairman David Dennis. “It’s time for both parties to look toward the future, and I look forward to finishing out this year strong serving our residents. It’s especially important to thank our great staff who have continued to focus their efforts and energy on delivering needed services to our citizens.” 

The County agreed to honor the time remaining in Scholes’ employment agreement. The settlement will pay Scholes $205,000, which is the equivalent of slightly less than nine months’ salary with benefits. 

Also, on Wednesday, the BOCC voted 3 to 2 to appoint Tom Stolz to serve as Interim County Manager.  Stolz has served as Deputy County Manager since May 2017 and as Assistant County Manager of Public Safety, Code Enforcement and Emergency Management since August 2016. Stolz also had more than 30 years’ experience with the Wichita Police Department and retired as Deputy Police Chief in 2012. He then was named Director of the joint City-County Metropolitan Area Building and Construction Department. 

“Tom is a proven leader who will no doubt bring stability to our organization.” Dennis said. “He has extensive experience in local government and has been an asset to Sedgwick County since he arrived.”
