Media Advisory for Board of County Commission Meetings at Ruffin Building

(Sedgwick County, Kan.) – Starting Wednesday, Nov. 16, 2022, the Sedgwick County Board of County Commissioners (BoCC) will hold its regularly scheduled meetings in the lower-level auditorium of the Ruffin Building, located at 100 N. Broadway. This auditorium seats 158. There are single-use restrooms within the auditorium and additional restrooms just outside the auditorium space.

 Entrances and Parking

Four ground-level entrances are available at the Ruffin Building. Two doors are on the west side, off Broadway Street. Another entrance is on the east side, off Topeka Street, and the fourth entrance is on the south side, off Douglas Avenue. In addition to street parking along Broadway St., Topeka St. and Douglas Ave., free parking is available on the fourth floor of the parking garage west of the Ruffin Building on Broadway Street. Visitors can use a pedestrian walkway to cross over Broadway and into the Ruffin Building.

Security Measures

Sedgwick County Courthouse Police will be located at the auditorium entrance to run visitors through a magnetometer and search bags and backpacks for any weapons and/or hazardous materials. Please allow adequate time for this before the BoCC meeting begins.

ADA Accessibility

 Elevators are available on every floor of the Ruffin Building, including a gold, cylindrical elevator on the northeast side of the ground floor. Visitors can take this to the lower-level auditorium.

 Restrooms inside the auditorium are ADA accessible. Additionally, there is ADA seating in the auditorium.

 Public Comment

In-person comments at the BoCC meeting can be made by signing up the morning of the meeting. Sign-ups will close at 9 a.m. when the meeting begins.

Public comments may also be submitted on the website or emailed to communications@sedgwick.gov. Comments received by 5 p.m. on Tuesday will be read or placed into the record at the meeting.

 Comments from the public are generally limited to five (5) minutes. Time limits may be adjusted as necessary. Requests made by a member of the public under either (a) or (b) above shall be limited in frequency to no more than one presentation in every other Regular Wednesday meeting.

Media Coverage

 A back row in the auditorium has been reserved for media and their equipment and includes access to the in-house sound system. To plug in, media crews are advised to bring an audio cable 5 – 6 feet long.
