Prepayment of Real Property Taxes

The Sedgwick County Treasurer has received inquiries regarding the possibility of prepaying 2018 property taxes. Pursuant to state law and guidance from the IRS, residents in Sedgwick County are not able to prepay 2018 property taxes and receive a deduction. Residents may, however, pay their full 2017 property taxes by Dec. 31, 2017 and receive the deduction. Residents may pay the full amount in person today or tomorrow by 5 p.m. or online by Dec. 31, 2017 at 11:59 p.m.

Sedgwick County assessed property on March 1, 2017 for the period of Jan. 1, 2017 to Dec. 31, 2017. On Nov. 21, 2017, the County sent notices to residents notifying them of the assessment and billing the property tax in two installments, due Dec. 20, 2017 and May 10, 2018. Assuming the taxpayer has paid the first installment in 2017, they may choose to pay the second installment by Dec. 31, 2017 and may claim a deduction for this prepayment on their 2017 tax return.

Individuals are asked to check with their tax advisor regarding any and all tax deductions.
