On September 6, 2022, an inmate was assaulted with a makeshift weapon in the Detention Facility by another inmate. The victim was treated onsite by medical staff and did not require transportation to an area hospital and suffered no serious injuries.
At approximately 1:15PM, deputies responded to a fight. Three inmates had initiated an altercation with a single inmate in one of the housing units. Deputies arrived and secured and separated all parties involved, an improvised cutting weapon was recovered.

The motive for the assault is unknown.
Ensuring the safety and security of the inmates, staff and facility is of paramount importance to the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office. This incident is under investigation for the criminal conduct as well as a review of the circumstances surrounding the manufacturing of the improvised cutting device.
