Inmate Death 12.07.23

On December 7, 2023, at approximately 5:30 am, Detention staff located an unresponsive inmate in Pod 18 of the Sedgwick County Detention Facility.  On-site medical staff and Emergency Medical Services were notified and attempted life saving measures. The inmate was declared deceased on scene by medical personnel.

The Kansas Bureau of Investigations was notified and with the assistance of the Sheriff’s Office Investigations Division is looking into the death. Preliminary reports indicate the death was the result of self-inflicted asphyxiation. 

The inmate a 22 year old male had been in the custody of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office since August 26, 2023, for a capital murder charge. We will not be releasing the inmate’s name at this time pending notification of the family. This is the seventh in custody death this year.
