On April 24, 2021, Sedgwick County inmate, Samuel James Brown III (36), who was housed in Chase County experienced a medical emergency. He was transported from the Chase County Jail to Newman Memorial Hospital in Lyon County, by EMS. Brown was pronounced dead at approximately 8:15 AM. The cause of death is unknown pending an autopsy.

 

The Kansas Bureau of Investigation and the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Investigation Division have been notified. Brown’s family has also been notified.

 

Brown was held in the Sedgwick County Detention Facility on Robbery charges as well as Wichita Municipal charges. He had been in custody since late March 2021.

 

The Sedgwick County Detention Facility has booked over 5,000 people so far this year. This is the first in-custody death in 2021.
