Inmate Death 9.22.23

On September 22, 2023, at approximately 1040 am, an inmate was found unresponsive by her cellmate in Pod 21 of the Sedgwick County Detention Facility.  Detention Staff and Medical Staff immediately began cardiopulmonary resuscitation, until emergency medical services (E.M.S.) arrived.

The inmate was treated by E.M.S. and transported to a local hospital where at approximately 1149 am she was pronounced deceased.  Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Investigations and the Kansas Bureau of Investigations (K.B.I.) were contacted. Sheriff Investigations processed the scene.  The preliminary cause of death is unknown pending an autopsy.

The inmate had been in the custody of the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office since September 19, 2023, for two counts of contempt of court through the City of Wichita. The inmates name will not be released at the request of the family. This is the sixth in-custody death this year.
