Kids Home Alone Safety
When school is out and kids are on their own, safety becomes an important lesson for all ages. Here are some essential tips from Sedgwick County Fire District 1 (SCFD1) to ensure their well-being:
- Cooking Safety – Use the microwave instead of the stove or oven to reduce fire risk.
- Fire Extinguisher – Keep one in the house, and ensure kids know where it is and how to use it.
- Evacuation Practice – Teach kids how to quickly exit the house, including using windows if doors are blocked.
- Calling 9-1-1 – Make sure kids know when and how to call 9-1-1 and provide their address.
- Severe Weather – Ensure they know where to take shelter during storms.
- Stay Connected – If your child leaves, ask them to text or call with their location.
These tips can make all the difference in keeping your kids safe when they're home alone. Stay prepared and stay safe!
