Breastfeeding Resources

Every woman's breastfeeding journey is different.

The Sedgwick County Health Department's (SCHD) Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) program supports and educates women on the importance of providing breast milk to their infants for the first six months of the child’s life.

To encourage breastfeeding, SCHD offers education and support on breastfeeding and infant nutrition at no cost to all new parents, regardless of family income.

Breastfeeding Recommendations
  • The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the World Health Organization (WHO) recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first 6 months.
  • After 6 months, breastfeeding can continue alongside solid foods for up to 1 year or longer—as long as it works for the family.
Breastfeeding Facts
  • Breastfeeding provides the optimal food for infants and is associated with lower rates of childhood illness, including sudden unexpected infant death (SUID).
  • Breastfeeding is associated with a reduced risk of breast and ovarian cancers and faster recovery from childbirth.
  • In Kansas, the majority of mothers initiate (start) breastfeeding, but only half are still breastfeeding when their child is 6 months old.
